tv   The Late Show With Stephen Colbert  CBS  November 25, 2015 11:35pm-12:37am EST

11:35 pm
the late show with stephen colbert coming up next. >> good night and happy thanksgiving. >> happy thanksgiving. ( band playing intro music ) captioning sponsored by cbs >> stephen: hey! thanks everybody! ( cheers and applause ) >> stephen! stephen! stephen. >> stephen: thank you, everybody. thank you so much. that's a beautiful sound. that's a lovely sound.
11:36 pm
( cheers and applause ) oooh! aaah! thank you so much. welcome to "the late show." ( cheers and applause ) thank you, please, everybody. thank you. welcome to "the late show." i'm your host, stephen colbert. and i'm super excited because tomorrow is thanksgiving, and i'm not travelling. not that it wouldn't be great to see family. but today is the busiest travel day of the year, and this year it's even more complicated because the united states government has issued a worldwide travel alert. i know that sounds alarming to some people, but all that means is if you're traveling, you're going to want to avoid this area. just anything-- anything on this. ( cheers and applause ) any of that. any of that. , of course,-- that's all. , of course, our government,un,
11:37 pm
our government wouldn't leave us that vague. they gave us some specifics. they warn that multiple groups, as well as lone individuals, may target both official and private locations, using a variety of threats, conventional, and nonconventional. ( laughter ) so, basically, just be on the lookout for any kind of people, place, or thing. ( laughter ) remember the safety rhyme: "if it's a noun, hit the ground." ( cheers and applause ) but again--. ( cheers and applause ) but again, only, only if you're traveling anywhere in this area. bounce pass! can i see that? i really thought this would
11:38 pm
bounce. ( laughter ) ( applause ) i think we just witnessed one of the unconventional attacks right there. ( laughter ) we've got a great show for you tonight, and enjoy it because there is no show for you tomorrow. first, i'm sitting down with music legend gloria estefan. ( cheers and applause ) okay. i'll ask her why the rhythm is going to get me? what did i ever do to the rhythm? whatever it is, rhythm, i'm sorry. ( laughter ) then i'll be talking to two veterans of iraq and afghanistan who continue to find ways to serve our country, eric greitens ( cheers and applause ) and jake wood. keeper( cheers and applause ) we will reminisce about a simpler time, when there were only two wars in the middle east. plus, i'll be joined by
11:39 pm
daniel boulud. ( cheers and applause ) daniel and i are going to make thanksgiving dinner, and if he plays his cards right, maybe breakfast. hey, hey, hey, folks. that sounds like jon batiste and stay human. hey, it is jon batiste and stay human! say hi, everybody! ( cheers and applause ) they are ready to kick this thing off, but before we "shake conga," one more thing: snoop dogg is giving 1,500 turkeys to families in need. naturally, those turkeys will be smoked. tonight, stephen welcomes gloria estefan.
11:40 pm
wood. and chef daniel boulud. featuring jon batiste and stay human. and now it's time for "the late show with stephen colbert"! ( cheers and applause ) >> stephen: hey! hey! >> stephen! stephen! stephen! >> stephen: thank you very much. i'm not sure i deserve that tonight. thank you very much. no, no. thank you. no. ( cheers )
11:41 pm
you've got to make me earn it or i'll get lazy. thank you. folks, i don't know about you, but i love thanksgiving, but, sadly, the holiday dinner table has become a minefield of controversial subjects like sex, religion, and what's the difference between sweet potatoes and yams? turns out yams and sweet potatoes taste the same because they are the same and that grocery stores are just selling some sweet potatoes as yams. it's the same way that garbanzo beans change their name to from the ethnic food aisle. don't forget who you are, garbanzo! don't forget your roots. that's a movie i'm making about a garbanzo bean that leaves the 'hood. it is confusing to call sweet
11:42 pm
actually a completely different vegetable that is actually called a yam. commercially in the united states. why would we? we already have sweet potatoes, and sweet and potato are america's favorite food groups. and yam v. sweet potato is not the only holiday controversy. consider the presidential turkey pardon. every year, the president symbolically spares one bird. but last year, obama made it a double. >> today i am taking an action fully within my legal authority, the same kind of action tain bee democrats anddemocrats and republican presidents before me, to spare the lives of two turkeys, mac and cheese. >> stephen: just to be clear, mac and cheese were the names of the turkeys. it was part of their plan to escape posing as a side dish. even this harmless gesture of good will is pitting people against each other because p-p-p
11:43 pm
just did a poll-poll-poll, questioning the presidential poll tree pardoning power, and 59% of the campaigns were in favor of the two-purky pardoning while only 11% of republicans were on board. and 100% of vegans wanted to talk about how vegans live longer and cheese is dairy murder. now, i thought this was the most trivial poll question i'd ever seen, until i saw the rest of the poll, where they also asked about all the political leanings of cranberry sauce and found that 66% of democrats like it while only 60% of republicans like it, while 100% of people polled were just glad to have something on their plate that wasn't brown. ( laughter ) and when it comes to the notoriously divisive sweet potatoes, 34% of democrats like theirs with marshmallows while only 27% of republicans do.
11:44 pm
a pretty good president. ( laughter ) ( applause ) ( cheers ) mmm! now, while this is all extremely valuable data, i gotta say, please, please, can't thanksgiving be the one day when we don't try and see everything through the lens of politics? don't get me wrong. there are some things you should see through the lens of politics-- for instance, politicians. but tomorrow, let's not talk about politics. in the spirit of the first thanksgiving, hosts, just share your food and try not to worry that your guests seem like they're never going to leave. we'll be right back with gloria
11:45 pm
( applause ) what is this? that is my diary, for my feelings. i don't want your feelings skinny, i want a million dollars. my money is in the bank fool. i'm not a fool, i'm a smart lady with a lot of good plans. oh, you wanted a million dollars? what are you doing here? you're supposed to be in the getaway car. why don't we just go to old navy, they're giving away a million dollars on thanksgiving. a million dollars? someone in line when stores open on thanksgiving will win a million dollars and everything's 50% off thursday and friday! why would they do that? let me just ask you a question, have you known about this the whole time? like, a fortnight. what is a fortnight? it's two weeks. what is wrong with you? why didn't you tell me this earlier? i thought we were gonna meet snoop. hi! what are you talking about? you know i just started spitting myself, love to throw your way. i'm sorry i... looks like it's your lucky day daddy long legs.
11:46 pm
all right, let's go to old navy. can i take some of these? where's my purse? we gotta get gas. just press clean and let roomba from irobot help with your everyday messes. roomba navigates your entire home cleaning up pet hair and debris for up to 2 hours. which means your floors are always clean. you and roomba from irobot better together . i take prilosec otc each morning for my frequent heartburn because you can't beat zero heartburn! ahhh the sweet taste of victory! prilosec otc. one pill each morning. 24 hours. zero heartburn. t-mobile has a deal that blows away black friday. get a 4g lte tablet on us, when you get a data plan for no money down,

11:48 pm
( band playing )
11:49 pm
( cheers and applause ) >> stephen: welcome back, everybody. my first guest has won seven grammies and sold over 100 million albums. her new broadway musical is called "on your feet!" come on and shake your body cothat kongy. know you can enjoy yourself any longer just do that conga beat >> stephen: please get on your feet for gloria estefan! get on your feet. ( applause )
11:50 pm
>> oh, they're good! oh, my gosh! that band! they are hot! >> stephen: well, as i said, seven grammys 100 million albums, and now you've got a very exciting thing. the new show is at the marquis theatre, and it's. >> i'm excited. >> stephen: this is your life >> it is. >> stephen: how does it feel to sit there in the audience and see someone play you on stage? do you ever go, "no, no?" >> never, they've done a phenomenal job. we have been in from the first moment and we let them do their thing. ana villafane, josh segarra, there's great chemistry there which is very important because we've been married 37 years and together 40. ( cheers and applause ) yeah. dream team, jerry mitchell, and we can't judge for more. >> stephen: the young lady playing you, what's her name?
11:51 pm
>> ana villafane. >> stephen: she went to the same catholic school that you went to in miami, right? >> all-girl catholic high school. the guns, yes. that's-- you know -- >> those nuns have got the beat, evidently. ( laughter ). >> they actually inspired my hit that you quoted in your opening "the rhythm is going to get you." it's about catholic birth control is what it's about. ( cheers and applause ) that's what it's about. >> stephen: it's true, it's true. i understand something about that song. is this true that originally that song was the bogeyman's going to get you? >> yes, indeed. my drummer wrote it. we cowrote it. and he comes with the lyric, "the bogeyman is going to get you." i said i'm not going to sing, the bogeyman is going to get you." i said you know what's going to get you, the rhythm. >> stephen: you blew the chance to one of the top 10 halloween songs of all time. it could have been a monster
11:52 pm
>> that's why we put the woo, in there. that's an homage to the original song. >> stephen: are you serious? >> yes, i'm serious. >> stephen: you're credited with bringing latin music all over the world. really one of the greats of latin music. are there some countries that are excited or accepting in ways you didn't expect that to happen? >> yes. japan, they love, love, love latin music. in fact, we went there and there was a salsa band if you close your eyes you thought they were all latin. they were all japanese. they couldn't speak spanish, but they sounded amazing. incredible. it really worked great everywhere. the rhythm really does get peemed. it does upon. it was what we communicated with as human beings first. >> stephen: the rhythm has gotten you something that is really extraordinary pup must be very proud of. yesterday, in washington, d.c. the president presented you with the highest civilian award, the medal of freedom. >> yes. >> stephen: right there. congratulations.
11:53 pm
( cheers and applause ). >> yes, there it is. >> stephen: this is, you were nice enough to let me hold it for just a second. >> i want you to do more than just hold it. >> stephen: that is nice right there. >> i think you deserve-- i think you deserve -- >> don't you dare. don't you dare. no way, no way. >> yes, way. >> stephen: i will not let you-- no, no, no! >> come on. >> stephen: uh-uh. no. you're very nice. i'll put on your necklace. you put it on and i'll put on one of your necklaces instead. you're very kind. >> i can put it in front of you. >> stephen: can i hold it. >> you deserve it if anybody does. ( cheers and applause ) >> stephen: thank you. i've got captain america's shield up there. no big deal, but captain america's shield up there. you were born in cuba and came to the united states, and now you have your lights on broadway. you're sort of an embody want of the american dream.
11:54 pm
what did this mean to you? >> that's exactly what that meant. my dad brought us here to be raised in freedom and he fought for people in bay of pigs in cuba and vietnam -- >> he fought in the bay of pigs? >> yes, he did. he was a political prisoner for two years there, he did. poor guy. he really put his money where his mouth is. i'm an army brat. i was raised in the army and i think he's got to be in heaven. there's no other place placefor him to be. and i think he was very, very proud. and my mom watched via live stream, because she doesn't like to leave her house anyone g.m. she commands the world from there. and emilio thought of them as parents. it was one of those moments honestly to have gotten the medal together with emilio -- >> he got one as well. >> yes, when we took the picture with the president he said, "come here, come here. would you mind if we gave you the medals together because michelle and i were getting something, we would want it to be together?" we said, "absolutely. we didn't know that could be done." and he said, "yes, when i call
11:55 pm
your names, both of you come up and we will do it together." >> phenomenal. >> stephen: lovely. >> it was great. ( applause ). >> stephen: you were born in cuba. >> i was. >> stephen: and your family were refugees to the united states. >> exiles. >> stephen: what-- what do you think of our country opening up diplomatic relationships with cuba again? does that make you hopeful? >> well, i hope it eliminates the excuse that, you know, that the government there has had forever that everything is the united states' fault, because it really isn't. the biggest embargo there is the government's embargo on the people. because up until now, they've done business with every other country in the world. they've had travelers from everywhere. if you were an american and really wanted to go to cube ayou could but nothing has changed for the cuban people. so they always blamed us. hopefully now it will give the people of cuba a lot more hope and little by little they will be able to make a change. 57 years the same guy in power, guys, two guys.
11:56 pm
>> stephen: even though the country is opening up a bit, it's still bad enough there that people pooem are fleeing across the straits there to florida. >> yes. >> stephen: i was down there. right before the show began i was down there in florida. >> right now. >> stephen: no, before the show began in september, in august i was down there. and i actually took this photo. this is a photo of a boat that we found. >> the raft s. >> stephen: one of the rafts out there. this is about 20, 25 feet long. >> yes. >> stephen: 18 people had been on it. >> and that's big. >> stephen: it had a diesel engine with a fixed prop and a rudder on the back. it had nominal food and water on it. 'people had gone across 90 miles of open oation oceanjust to get to the united states. >> and they made it. >> stephen: it must still be very bad there. >> it's bad because you don't see anything exwb fleeing the united states. let's put it that way. this is a great country. and for people to take a chance, which is really a 50-50 chance, those are very treacherous waters and 50% of the people that cross don't make it. >> stephen: as someone whose
11:57 pm
you have any insight into how we should be responding to the number of refugees, specifically, something like the syrian refugees who want to come to the united states. do you have an memory reaction to that? >> of course, i have have an emotional reaction. i have a human reaction as well. obviously, we have to be careful. we are living in very dangerous times. there are ways to help out. women and children, in life boats, bring women and children first. obviously, be very careful how you bring them in. i took literature of the holocaust and when i saw in cuba they turned away a giant boat full of jews when they tried to escape there and that happened here as well and later a lot of them were killed, we can't let that happen. and this is what we're about. we just have to do it the right way, the right way. ( cheers and applause ) >> stephen: well, gloria, "on your feet," is at the marquis theatre on broadway. dp see it. the great gloria estefan.

( band playing ) >> stephen: welcome back, everybody. you know, we live in an age of scientific marvel ( cheers and applause ) sneed proof? consider this picture of test tubefilled with colorful liquid. that would not have been possible in the 1950s because everything was in black and white back then. thank you, nasa. and we wouldn't be where we are scientifically and we wouldn't be where we are without those who have dedicated their lives to science-- sir isaac newton, marie curie, and
12:02 am
chimps have been smrt great contributors to scientific research. after decades of test trials we can say definitively morningies have an innate curiosity about yellow hats. and now after years of serious monkey business, the national institutes of health are finally ready to offer serious monkey retirement. >> chimpanzees will no longer be used in research at the national institutes of health. >> the government actually decided two years ago that the chimp program was coming to an end, but it kept 50 animals on standby just in case they still were needed for a public health emergency. those remaining primates will now be sent to a federal sanctuary. retiring and will finally have the time to pursue their dream of writing a novel on an infinite number of type writers. according to the n.i.h., or nee, in the past few years, not a single proposal has been submited by a researcher that justifies the use of the animals. not even the recent proposal to

as an animal lover i'm as an animal lover, i'm happy happy we've come to the end of the ape testing era which is why i'm releasing the late show ape zobo. part of the reason we're able to bring you such high-quality shows every night is all of our jokes have first been tested on zobo here. let's take a quick look at the joke-testing process. >> senator ted cruz has said an atheist isn't fit to be president. which is ironic, because if he's elected, there will be a lot more people doubting god's existence. ( laughter ) ( applause ) ( cheers and applause ). >> stephen: now i want to you know, it's important for me that you know zobo was a rescue ape. i found him outside a honda dealership holding a sign that said, their sale is bananas. i offered him a ride and he said that would be great. now it's time to let him go.
12:05 am

12:10 am
my next guests are veterans of iraq and afghanistan, and they are continuing to serve their country at home and abroad. please welcome eric greitens and jake wood. ( cheers and applause ) >> stephen: gentlemen, thank you for being here. >> thanks for having us. >> stephen: thanks for wednesday. >> i didn't get the dress code. >> stephen: eric, you are a former rhodes scholar, navy seal, writer, photographer and c.e.o. of the mission conditions. the making of a navy seal, a "new york times" bestseller. jake you're a former marine, served in iraq and afghanistan, a veteran advocate and c.e.o. of team rubicon. you earned the navy marine corps
12:11 am
named a cnn hero in 2012. ( cheers and applause ) both of you are the subject of a new book by "time" political columnist joe klein called "charlie mike." what is "charlie mike" mean, and who is charlie and who is mike? ( laughter ). >> so, charlie mike means continue the mission. and this mission for jake and i started, you know, when i came back from iraq. i had been serving there, my team was hit by a suicide truck bomb. i came back home. i went to the hospital. and you walk into a hospital, you're talking to men and women who are 19, 20, 21 years old. you ask them all,"what do you want to do when you recover?" and they all say to you, "i want to return to my unit." the harsh reality for a lot of the men and women i visited that day had pretty serious injuries and they were not going to be able to go back to their unit but there was a way for them to continue their mission. i found myself as you went around to the hospital rooms they hear from a lot of us thank you. and what i found myself saying
12:12 am
to all of them was also, "we still need you. we still need your strength pup still have something to offer." and we wanted to find a way for all those veteranses to come back home and continue their mission of service here at home. >> stephen: what are some of the ways they can do that? ( applause ). >> what's incredible with the mission continues is that today we have over 5,000 veterans around the country and they were out working for habitat for humanity, big brothers, big sisters, boys and girls clubs and taking on some of the toughest problems, gang violence, childhood illiteracy, childhood hunger, and through their service they rebuild a sense of purpose while at the stronger community s. >> stephen: now, jake, how did you-- ( applause ) what is team rubicon and how did that get started? >> so i came back in 2009. i did a tour in iraq and a tour in afghanistan as a scout sniper in the marine corps and when i business school.
12:13 am
do with my life but i found myself in my living room watching the devastation unfold after the earthquake in port-au-prince, wanted to get down there. when i saw what i was happening i knew i had the experiences and skills to have a positive impact there. so together with another marine, william mcnulty, we organized a team of veterans and doctors, we went to port-au-prince -- >> i understand you called first. >> yes, these-- called a couple of organizations, and they weren't really taking time. so -- >>ure and response was? >> to hell with it. let's go. ( applause ) >> can i say that on tv. >> stephen: sure, why not? why is the motto of team rubicon, "we do chaos?" >> listen, after 15 years of war, we have 2.5 million men and women coming back doing chaos overseas in iraq and afghanistan and they can still do it here at home. team rubicon is a nonprofit responding to disasters all across the country and around the world taking the skills and
12:14 am
experiences of 32,000 veterans, retraining them for disaster response and sending them into communities during their greatest time of need and we do chaos. it's what we do well. >> what's incredible is-- ( applause ) when there's any kind of disaster, anywhere, jake puts out a call for team rubicon, and he has thousands of veterans respond. and whether it's a hurricane on the east coast, tornadoes in the midwest, and these veterans come back and they start to serve again. >> stephen: i understand you were just helping down in south carolina. >> we were. >> stephen: how did you guys get to know each other? >> so we got to know each other actually, i think jake had-- >> yeah, so, when we were down in port-au-prince, i was flying back through miami, and we were on a plane from miami back to los angeles, and my-- one of the gentlemen that was with me, clay hunt, handed me an "outs" magazine and pointed to this article with this handsome young man on it telling the story of this guy who started an organization called mission continues. and they were handing out fellowships for young veterans
12:15 am
to get out and work on these nonprofits and so we decided that we'd come back and try to get a hold of eric, and we did, and the rest is history. >> stephen: so you became a fellow for mission continues? >> i did. i was one of the first fellows in 2010. >> stephen: did help start team rubicon? >> it did. and my good friend who i served with, clay hunt, was also a fellow and it was a tremendous experience. >> stephen: i understand you're now running for the governor of missouri. >> i am, yes. >> stephen: good luck with that. >> thank you very much. >> stephen: the mission does continue there. we need-- i think it would be wonderful if there were more people in government who had served in our military because they do have the training to organize and to lead people, and that's missing right now. if people out there want to help with either one of your organizations how do they do it. for mission continues go to missioncontinues.org, and you can find ways to donate,
12:16 am
the veterans come back and serve. >> they can go to teamrubiconusa.org. civilians can sign up, serve alongside our military veterans in their communities when they're needed. and we'd welcome their support. >> stephen: gentlemen, thank you so much. jake woods, eric grietens. ( applause ) good-bye, guys.

( cheers and applause ). >> how are you? >> stephen: okay. clear something up for me-- you are a chef. what is the difference between a chef and a cook? does a chef have a nicer hat or something like that? >> the chef is the big boss. big boss. >> the chef is the one who governs everybody. >> stephen: okay, chef, tell us what to do here. what are some tips for making an everyone out there?
12:21 am
thanksgiving is such an amazing celebration of -- >> does france have thanksgiving? >> we don't. >> stephen: do you have a turkey day? >> we have a turkey day, christmas, christmas is turkey day. >> stephen: we have that, too. >> stephen: lucky. >> stephen: it's not a contest but we have two of them. >> i like to brian my turkey. >> stephen: we brian. >> it's almost like a light sea water, somewhere where you can dream of swimming and sort of tasting the sea water. that's kind of that brian you want. >> stephen: so just take the turkey to the beach with you, wear one on each arm like a water wing and just dive in. go for a swim. >> give it a swim. >> stephen: that sounds simple. >> and, of course, you want flavor of spice, autumn flavor. that's what is beautiful with thanksgiving. it's about celebrating autumn and celebrating the family and celebrating america. >> stephen: excellent, excellent. >> but celebrating america, i wanted to do a taduncan. roasting a turkey like this,
12:22 am
